What Is A Natural Mattress

Have you ever wondered what it means for a mattress to be natural?

There are all kinds of terms used these days when it comes to the so called, “natural” mattress. You may have come across terms like bio-foam, green-tea infused foam, natural memory foam, copper infused foam, graphite foam, or the one that companies love to flaunt… bamboo.

So what do all of these mean and what’s the actual definition of a, “natural” mattress? We explain it in the video below.

Latex vs Memory Foam: Which one is the Better Choice?

What's the difference between innerspring and hybrid mattress

Have you heard of the popular debate concerning the several types of mattresses? A comparison between a latex coil hybrid mattress and a memory foam mattress seems to intrigue experts and customers alike. Is latex actually better than memory foam, and what are the pros and cons to each? Here are a few things to know before you try them both out and to help you form your own opinion on the matter.

What’s the difference between innerspring and hybrid mattress?

Let’s dip into some interesting mattress history. An innerspring mattress system has been around since the 1930’s. Although its contemporary rivals become more and more popular as time goes by, innerspring mattresses are still out there, and they still have their loyal supporters. As their name suggests, the core of these mattresses is made of supportive, but flexible coil systems. It ranges from Bonnell, offset, and continuous wire coils, to pocketed coils, (also known as encased coils, or Marshall coils). Are hybrid mattresses good

The pros and cons of innerspring mattresses

What many sleepers still prefer about these mattresses are their firmness and bounciness. As they absorb less body heat than their modern competitors, they feel a lot cooler to sleep on, which the, “hot sleepers” particularly love.

On the other hand, innerspring mattresses are less durable, they don’t have the ability to conform to a human body and often feel stiff. They offer poor motion separation, and the spring system is often quite loud whenever motion occurs.

What about hybrid mattresses?

It’s time to unravel what hybrid mattresses are. Hybrid is a word that denotes a combination of different elements, and when it comes to mattress production, it suggests the same. The hybrid mattress base is designed to offer the best the innerspring system had to offer, without the downsides. However, it also comes with a comfort layer above, usually coated with a fine layer of cotton. The comfort layer can be made of different materials, including latex, memory foam, polyfoam, and others.

Are hybrid mattresses good?

Hybrid mattresses are an interesting combination that captured a lot of attention and quite a few hearts. Just like the traditional innerspring versions, they offer stability and firmness, but with a twist that’s hard to resist: hybrids are a lot more flexible, giving in under a body’s weight, which makes them a lot more comfortable and good for the back. People who don’t enjoy sleeping on very firm surfaces embraced this mattress kind, as it seems to offer more perks than traditional innerspring mattresses.

Latex vs memory foam: how to make the choice?

As mentioned previously, hybrid mattresses come in several forms, one of which uses a comfort layer made of latex, and another which uses a comfort layer made of memory foam. Both types have their pros and cons, and it’s ultimately up to the consumer to decide which one makes the most sense for them.

Here is a quick overview that can help you with your purchase. Keep in mind that both the natural and the synthetic latex are generally used to make comfort layers for hybrid mattresses, but in our comparison we’ll be speaking only about natural latex.

When is it better to go with latex?

Latex is a very durable, elastic material that behaves wonderfully under the body’s weight. It gives in slightly, conforming to the body’s curves and contours, and is generally more bouncy. Lying on a latex hybrid mattress feels comfortable, causing no feeling of sinking in or, “getting stuck” in the comfort layer, as is common with memory foam.

Who is this material most beneficial for? The light, active sleepers who move around a lot are the best, “target audience” for this mattress type. It allows and absorbs movement very well, letting the active sleeper in the pair enjoy their sleeping style without bothering the partner who doesn’t move around actively during their rest.

When does memory foam seem like a better choice?

Memory foam, on the other hand, has its passionate supporters as well. It’s a material that offers more versatility, (there are mattresses made with gel memory foam, responsive memory foam, polyfoam etc.), more compression, and slower response time.

Memory foam hybrid mattresses are the best choice for sleepers who do not move around a lot, and who enjoy the feeling of sinking deeply into the fabric. This offers deeper compression support, as more sinkage equals out to more body contouring, which some sleepers prefer to bounciness.

What is the best hybrid mattress for side sleepers?what is best hybrid mattress for side sleepers

Why is it that we’re asking specifically about side sleepers? Side sleeping leads to generating significant pressure that concentrates in two particular parts of the body, the hip and the shoulder. If the mattress is too soft, a side sleeper’s body has insufficient support.

On the other hand, a mattress that’s too thick leaves no room for flexibility, and the pressure on the two aforementioned body points intensifies. People who tend to sleep on their side, therefore, usually have the most trouble finding the right mattress. Whether a side sleeper is active during the night or not, a latex hybrid mattress is the safest choice for them in most cases.

Of course, it takes some testing to figure out which firmness level is the one to go with, (soft, medium, or firm), but the general bounciness and flexibility that latex offers tend to be the most beneficial in this case. A memory foam could be a choice to consider, but its tendency to let the body sink in very deep wouldn’t offer the best overall comfort for a side sleeper, whose spine, shoulders and hips require more resistance and support.

All About Hybrid Mattresses: are They the Best Buy?

what is a latex hybrid mattress

If you are thinking about upgrading your bedroom with a new mattress that feels like a dream, congratulations! There’s no better investment than the one that goes to benefit your whole body, allowing you to rest, relax, and prepare for the challenges of a new day. You have probably heard about the mattress called a latex hybrid mattress, but what is a hybrid mattress exactly, and is latex better than memory foam? Here is all you need to know.

What is a hybrid mattress made of?

If you have successfully assessed that it’s time to buy a new mattress, you’ll surely want to take the time before your next mattress purchase to do your due diligence as far as research goes. A quality mattress isn’t just a skin-deep comfortable luxury; it represents important support for your back, and in the long run, it can raise the quality of a sleeper’s life significantly. So, what is a hybrid mattress actually made of?

what is a hybrid mattress made of

  1. It all starts at the core, with the support steel coil system. It’s designed to offer stability and pleasant firmness, but still leave room for flexibility that ensures comfort. The finest models come with individually wrapped springs, which provide additional relief.
  2. The next is the comfort layer, which can be made from different materials, including memory foam, polyfoam, latex, or other fabrics.
  3. The most comfortable hybrid mattresses have a top layer made of cotton, a natural material that’s soft, breathable, and pleasant to the skin.

Hybrid mattresses, as their name suggests, are made as a combination of two different mattress systems, allowing the sleeper to get the experience experts like to call the, “best of both worlds”. The comfort of a traditional spring mattress is successfully combined with the pleasantness and benefits of natural materials, creating a soft, durable surface that feels wonderful both on your skin and under your back.

What is a latex hybrid mattress?

A latex hybrid mattress is, as mentioned above, a form of a hybrid mattress with the comfort layer made from natural latex. Such a combination of materials results in a great experience, and latex is the material that ensures utter comfort and assists natural spine alignment. It’s also a natural allergen-free material that’s highly durable, putting it right in that sweet spot of being a long-lasting and environment-friendly solution for your bedroom.

Latex is a completely natural material that is made from the sap of the rubber tree. Thanks to its origin, latex is very elastic, which is why mattresses made with this material have the ability to shape perfectly to the contours of the body.

Latex hybrid mattresses usually come at three different firmness levels, plush, (the softest one), medium, and firm. Depending on your sleeping position, movement, weight, and personal preferences, you can choose one of the available options, guaranteeing yourself a high-quality, rejuvenating sleep.

Who are hybrid mattresses best for?

Although different consumers swear by this mattress type, hybrid mattresses seem to benefit those who like to sleep on their side the most. Side sleepers often suffer inconvenience, as sleeping in this position generally intensifies the pressure on two main points: the shoulder and a hip. With latex hybrid mattresses, the soft, flexible materials give in under these main pressure points, but the coil system, on the other hand, keeps the structure steady and solid, keeping those other parts supported as well.

In addition, a hybrid mattress can significantly reduce the effects of active movements from a partner who changes their position a lot during their sleep, this being due to a hybrids incomparable motion separation. This is why hybrid mattresses are also the best choice for couples who have different sleeping habits, allowing both partners to get a good night’s rest.

What is the best hybrid mattress?

Recognizing the best hybrid mattress takes knowing a few tips and tricks, and some testing out to see what fits your body the best. Have you heard that the firmer the mattress, the better it is for your spine? It’s time to eradicate such prejudice, as no two bodies are the same, and you will need to test a few mattresses out to discover which type of firmness works the best for you.what is the best hybrid mattress

  1. How to recognize if a mattress is too soft for you? If you lay down and the middle portion of your body just sinks into it, it signals that such a mattress doesn’t offer enough support for your back. Whether it’s a mattress you already have or the one you just tried at the store, it’s time to get up and go for the next option.
  2. What happens if the mattress is to firm? Lay on your side, and pay attention to how your hip and shoulder feel. If the mattress doesn’t give in at all, avoiding to somewhat adapt to the shape of your body, it’s way too firm for you. Next, please!
  3. How does it feel when the mattress is just right? If the mattress gives in under you, allowing you to feel its softness and comfort, but you can still sense the solid support underneath your body, you’ve got it – this one’s a keeper.

As a rule of thumb, you can also follow these guidelines in addition to trying the mattresses yourself:

  1. Soft mattresses are most often ideal for persons that weigh under 130 lbs,
  2. Medium to firm mattresses are generally the best fit for persons that weigh between 130-200 lbs,
  3. Firm mattresses are usually the best choice for persons that weigh over 200 lbs.

How to Tell When you Need a new Mattress

how to tell when you need a new mattress

Buying a latex hybrid mattress is only the beginning. After reading all the pocketed coil and latex mattress reviews, making a pros-and-cons list for spring mattresses and coil mattresses, and looking up how often to rotate your mattress, there’s one more thing you have to be aware of. There isn’t a single mattress that can last forever. Yes, some last a lot longer than others, but every mattress needs replacing at a certain point. So, here are the most urgent telltale indicators that it’s time tot look for a new mattress.

The age

As we’ve already said, mattresses can’t last forever. So, if you’re unsure how to tell when you need a new mattress, start simply with your mattress’ age. Premium mattresses boast the best longevity, but even they succumb to the constant wear and tear after seven years or so. If it’s been longer than then, it may be time to start thinking about replacing it.

You no longer wake up well-rested

Another piece of advice we have is to listen to your body. Whether or not your mattress still looks good-as-new, without any noticeable lumps or sagging, if you wake up feeling tired, something’s up. Yes, you might not think it, your mattress still looks like it’s in top-notch shape, but trust us – once you start waking up yawning and or aching each morning, it’s time to visit a mattress store.

Your body aches

Again, we have to emphasize – if you don’t know how to tell when you need a new mattress, carefully listen to what your body has to say. Waking up sleepy is one thing, but waking up sore and hurting is a code red! If it begins to happen to you, there’s only one thing left to do.

The sagging is noticeable

Nevermind the type of your mattress – sagging is a big no! Memory foam mattresses get softer over time, spring coils break, while latex compresses. All of these occurrences instigate sagging, which is an obvious sign that your once-cloudlike mattress is is flying a bit too close to the ground.

It has to be just right

Remember Goldilocks and her quest for the bed that suited her juuuuust right? Well, you should abide by the same standards. If you notice that your mattress has become too hard or too soft, a bear may not have slept in it, but it still means something bad has happened to it. If it no longer feels perfect to sleep in, then you know that you’ve found the perfect opportunity to find a new mattress.

Lumps?

Similar to sagging, lumps are visible to the naked eye. As you sleep in your bed every night, the padding of the mattress gradually shifts, and lumps appear. The uneven density that lumps point to means that you can no longer expect adequate support from your mattress. And, inadequate support means that you no longer sleep as rightly as you should be.

Sneezing stop!

Finally, you have to know that no matter what the mattress type, allergens do accumulate over time. Some mattresses are more resistant to it, such as latex and hybrid mattress, while others succumb to allergens quicker. Either way, if the sneezes start waking you up at night, or sneezing is the first thing you do in the morning, be quick about it and buy a new one. Nothing is more important than your health.

How Long do the Best Adjustable Base and Mattress Last?

How long do adjustable bed bases last

Finding an adjustable base mattress might be easier than finding the best adjustable base, making sure that base is safe to use with your beloved mattress. Among other factors to consider when shopping for adjustable bed bases, the question you need to ask is, “How long do best adjustable bed base and mattress last?”. So, let’s take a look at the factors that may affect the longevity of an adjustable base.

Sturdiness of construction

This is always the first factor when trying to determine how long adjustable bed bases last. Although there are many more components to adjustable bed bases, the soundness of the construction is certainly the primary, if not the most important aspect which affects how bed bases work.

Adjustable bases need not only withstand the weight of the person sleeping on it, but also be able to provide proper support to the mattress of your choosing. Depending on the size of the bed, as well as the size of the mattress that stems from it, being the pillar of sleep can become an increasingly difficult task for an adjustable base.

Also, the joints where the adjustments of the different parts of adjustable beds are made should be built to last. People who buy adjustable beds need to experiment with different sleeping positions, and the base has to be able to withstand all the aspects of this use.

That’s why it is paramount for an adjustable base to be made from materials that are able to cope with the weight of all the components that make for a good bed to sleep in. So, when looking for an adjustable base that will be as durable as possible, always start with the construction side of it.

Electrical components

In the past, adjustable bases were completely manual. No electrical components to go wrong. Beds used to be adjusted by the sleepers themselves, without any help from modern technology.

Nowadays, virtually all adjustable bases come with built-in motors used for adjusting the parts of the bed into different sleeping positions. This certainly eases the use, but it also introduces new parts than can go wrong. And, depending on the model and the price range, there are also features such as the massaging capability, remote control, USB outlets and under-the-bed lights.

So, the more electrical components, the more there is to go wrong. Well, it’s not that grim. Although it is far more likely for power or massaging motors to break, it doesn’t happen daily. It’s certainly not a good reason to deprive yourself of all the perks of modern sleeping.

You should, however, inquire about the manufacturers of the motors and other electrical components prior to the purchase, and do your research. Ask around, check the internet, and see just how reliable all the electrical components present in your bed base are.

Finally, the warranty period usually covers all the potential breakdowns of bed base’s electrical components, so even if something does go wrong, you will not be left beached. If you are not in the warranty period anymore, you can give a professional service a call, who excel in electrical installations, repairs and & maintenance.

Air circulation

When compared to other aspects of adjustable bed bases, air circulation does not sound like a particularly important factor in the answer to the question of how long do adjustable bed bases last.

It is, however, extremely important not to the physical longevity of your base in terms of breakdowns and construction failures, but to the medical aspect of it. A base should not just stand firm for as long as possible. It should also be healthy for the longest amount of time.

Air circulation helps eliminate any potential problems that may arise from mold growth. People who buy adjustable bed bases do so mainly to alleviate health problems that surface during sleeping.

These problems include snoring, sleep apnea, acid reflux, and many others. All of these conditions can worsen under the influence of various types of mold that can appear if there is insufficient air circulation of the bed base.

It is for this reason that air circulation factors into the longevity of an adjustable bed base. In order for customers to reap the health benefits for as long as possible, proper air circulation is necessary.

So, don’t think about just the construction and electrical components when trying to determine how long adjustable bed bases last. Think about your health, too. As nothing is more important.

Off-Gassing… What is it and Should I be Concerned?

What Is Off-Gassing

When it comes to mattresses, off-gassing refers to the chemicals from the foams, glues, and fire-retardants that are being emitted into the air. Specifically, the types of materials that are found in mattresses are acetone, benzene, formaldehyde, and methylene chloride. Such chemicals are named VOCs, (Volatile Organic Compound). These are emitted as gases from the solids that are derived from the mattress. Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors, (up to 10 times higher), than outdoors. So it gives off a very distinct smell, most say it resembles the smell of cleaning supplies or a, “new car smell”.

Should I Be Worried About Off-Gassing?

VOCs, (Volatile Organic Compound), can have short-and long-term adverse health effects. Some side effects of the off-gassing are irritation in the eyes, throat, and nose, and it may cause asthma. Just as comfort is subjective, chemical sensitivity is subjective as well. It varies from person to person. It really boils down to how chemically sensitive you are. Some people are very chemically sensitive where in they would need a completely natural mattress. To some other people, this issue not a priority. But for those of us that want to be responsible consumers, this is good information for us to have handy.

Is there any solution?

Yes! There is a solution, if you love the feel of memory foam or a polyurethane foam, Certipur is your answer! Certipur is a non-profit organization that serves as a certification program that tests polyurethane foams to give consumers confidence in the foam they’re buying. They have rigorous standards placed on foam producers. Part of their standard is that they do not accept any foam made with Mercury, lead, other heavy metals or made with formaldehyde. Here at Mattress Makers we only use foam that is certified by Certipur. The other option, and most preferred, is buying Latex! It’s a natural material with no harmful chemicals! It lasts 3 to 4 times longer than foam and it sleeps cool! These are the two options that are available for consumers that are worried about chemicals.

All in All

As we learned, off-Gassing is the the result of VOCs being emitted into the air. Those VOCs are the toxic chemicals that are used to make the mattress, which we learned can be harmful for either the short or the long-term. There are solutions though, first with Certipur. The second and most preferred option is Latex, its a natural material with no harmful chemicals, lasts 3 to 4 times longer than foam and sleeps so cool! This information was provided in order for you to make an educated purchase, but it’s ultimately it is up to the sleeper to decide if they find it a priority to sleep naturally.

Latex Mattress vs. Topper

Natural response mattress - smiling lying woman

Has it been a long time since you’ve had a good-night’s sleep? Perhaps you are longing for that soothing embrace of your bed all day long, but come bedtime, something’s amiss, and that might just be your mattress. Over the years, it’s become home to minuscule critters that you do not want anywhere near you and most likely lost its original form. Not only does this cause discomfort and lack of rest, but also directly leads to numerous health issues.

Although popular mattress choices include spring coil mattresses and memory foam mattresses, what would definitely eliminate all these problems is a natural response mattress. With its modern innovations and all-natural materials, natural latex is your best bet for optimum rest.

But if you think that there is hope for your old mattress after all and a simple makeover is all it needs, then maybe you’re considering purchasing a topper as an addition that would make it more comfortable. For your convenience, we’ve compared the two options to help you make a sage decision.

Cost

So now you’re thinking how much money you’ve stashed under your mattress and if you can actually afford a new one. If you think purchasing a brand new mattress would put too much strain on your budget, maybe you could consider settling for a topper, at least for the time being.

But, if you think you owe it to yourself to invest in a new one, then by all means go for a natural response mattress. Although more expensive, they’re well-worth it, and despite the fact that toppers come at a lower cost, they are, after all, just a temporary fix which won’t eliminate the core problems.

Health & Comfort

In this respect, the topper is definitely a losing battle. As mentioned before, it will make your old mattress somewhat more comfortable, but it cannot work wonders. After a while, your back will go back to suffering from lack of proper support. What’s more, although the latest toppers have seen more luxurious improvements, being made of hypoallergenic and natural materials, these come at a heftier price.

The natural response latex mattress, however, provide excellent support for you back, allowing you thorough rest. This applies to hot sleepers as well, since its combination of natural materials efficiently regulates temperature.

Another amazing innovation of the natural hybrid mattress is the individually wrapped coil feature. These coils reduce motion transfer, so you can continue enjoying your sweet slumber even if your partner needs to get out of bed in the middle of the night. This mattress is available in three varieties – soft, medium and firm, depending on your personal preferences.

Not only are natural response latex mattresses all-natural and eco-friendly, you can also rest easy and forget, (literally),about allergies.

Durability

Depending on its quality, investing in a mattress topper could delay your investment in a new mattress for a few years. But if you want to know you’re spending your money wisely and investing in your health and comfort, a natural response mattress is the way to go. With its 20 years of warranty, you’re likely to enjoy decades of comfort before the thought of replacing it crosses your mind.

What you eat Affects the Quality of Your Sleep

Mattress San Diego

Mattress San DiegoIf you are looking for a mattress in San Diego, or any other big city in the USA, you can say you are spoilt for choice. There are not only numerous stores, but the stores themselves have an abundance of options, depending on your price range, comfort requirements and sizes. In order to choose a suitable mattress for yourself, you should put enough time and thought into it. Make a day out of it, mattress shopping and then maybe a restaurant for a meal. Speaking of food, did you know that food can affect the quality of your sleep? In more ways than just one. Read on to find out more.

Variety leads to good long sleep

A study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania studied the relation between the duration of sleep and diet. Their findings have led them to conclude that more versatile food leads to longer and more regular sleep. People who eat very monotonous food tend to sleep fewer hours. It has also been speculated that fatty or spicy food can disrupt sleep, as they can cause acid reflux, which disrupts sleep, and is only worsened by the horizontal position of the sleeper. Sufficient water intake is also a contributor to a good night sleep.

Calories can determine sleep length

The amount of calories a person takes in can also determine the amount of sleep. People who eat more than recommended doses of food are often the ones who sleep less time than necessary for normal functioning (which is around 8 hours in normal adults). Those who eat the amount of calories appropriate for them according to nutritionists, tend to sleep around the 8 hour mark. Finally, those who eat significantly less than recommended tend to sleep longer, possibly as an energy conservation method.

Stimulants, stimulants

Most of us know not to have coffee close to bed time. And most of us also know that the compound which is responsible for this alertness is caffeine. What you may not know is that caffeine is not only found in coffee, but in myriads of other products as well. Energy drinks tend to be choke-full of it, too. Green and black tea can have a higher concentration of it than coffee, so a nice cup of tea and a book before bed might be worse for your sleep quality than you think. A similar stimulant is nicotine. Even though we know what it is, most of us don’t think of it as a stimulant. However, it belongs to the same class of compounds as caffeine. Cigarettes are best avoided around bed time (or preferably avoided altogether.)

A nightcap, then?

Alcohol is a tricky subject when it comes to its effect on sleep. On the one hand, it sure can knock you out in the short term. However, it may cause you to wake up in the middle of the night, no more rested than you’d be with no sleep. A much better idea is using natural remedies such as CBD oil for better sleep.

These findings are not conclusive, of course. However, they can be an indicator that something you are doing during the day is causing you sleep problems. Another important aspect of sleep comfort is the mattress you sleep on. Depending on your sleeping position and preference, there are many options to choose from. Buying a mattress in San Diego is as easy as finding a suitable store, and taking your time to browse the wares. Mattress makers offer a portfolio of products to fit everyone’s needs and wants.
